At what age do Vizslas calm down? ›

Hungarian Vizslas are energetic dogs with big personalities even as adults, but you should notice slightly calmer behaviour when they're around two years old.

More than most other breeds, Vizslas need a great deal of companionship and do not like being left alone for more than a few hours. They tend to express their unhappiness through destructive chewing and barking.

A Vizsla usually only becomes hostile if they perceive a threat to their family. Sometimes, these canines might become overprotective since they are very attached to their people. Fortunately, this tendency can be controlled with proper training.

No, Vizslas are not naturally aggressive. They were bred for hunting, which means they have a high energy level and a keen prey drive, but this shouldn't be mistaken for aggression. With proper training and socialization, Vizslas are affectionate and loyal companions.

If you get the training right, your Vizsla will learn to fit in with your life and you will never need to chastise it. Simple commands will suffice, preferably of one word and syllable – eg SIT, DROP, DOWN, NO! LEAVE, STAY etc., followed by 'Good dog! ' or 'Well done!

Due to their cycling hormones, a female Vizslas mood may vary, she may become sulky or when faced with things she does not like. Overall, a female will have a calmer disposition than the male and be more gentle around children.

I don't typically see this as the case, although if one person is the main caretaker and trainer, it would be logical for the Vizsla to bond better with that person. It's typical of the breed, and my own dogs to love people and for them to gravitate towards people, even strangers if they seem friendly.

The Vizsla dog breed is generally healthy and has an average lifespan of 10-14 years. That said, they are susceptible to some health issues. Pet parents can prevent these conditions by getting their puppy from a reputable Vizsla rescue or a breeder who responsibly tests their dogs.

"They will cuddle as often as possible. It's said that having a vizsla is like having a shadow because they love to be close and follow you around." Chihuahua owners will be pleased to know that these pups also made the list, mainly because they love to be stroked, carried and hugged.

On the plus side, they have very little odor and don't need a ton of grooming. While they're outdoorsy, they're not meant to live outside.

Can Vizslas be off leash? ›

Vizslas were owned and bred by Hungarian royalty and at night, the vizslas lived inside and slept in their owners' beds. This means that they need a lot of physical exercise, especially when they're younger. Leashed walks will not cut it. They need to run around off-leash frequently.

A Vizsla puppy locked up in a crate for 8 to 10 hours a day will become a "crazed wild dog." Activity is important and too much time in the box is very hard on them. In the beginning, keep the crate small. We recommend a "medium" or 400 size crate.

Vizslas form strong bonds with their owners and love human company so often suffer with separation anxiety if left alone. Ideally, your Vizsla will need someone around all day to keep them company. If left alone they can develop negative behaviour due to stress.

Make sure they've had enough training, off leash running, and playing before you ask them to settle. For puppies, hold them tight with a calming demeanor, breathing slowly and soothing them to relax. This can take 3mins to half an hour or more the first time.

Growth plates gradually thin as the hormonal changes approaching puberty signal the growth plates to close. In puppies, this closure normally completes between 18 to 24 months old in Vizslas.

From 1 to 2 Years

Your dog has graduated from puppyhood. As your puppy nears age one (up to two years for a large breed), they're beginning to look and act more mature. They will probably still be playful, but now they've learned the ropes and are much better at following the rules.
